Counselling

What happens at the first counselling session?

At your first session an experienced counsellor will discuss with you your current situation and concerns for up to 50 minutes. You and the counsellor will talk about how Relate might be able to help and your counsellor may recommend a Relate counselling service or he or she may suggest another organisation.

The first appointment does not commit you to ongoing appointments. It is an opportunity for you to see if counselling is for you.

How can counselling help me?

Counselling helps you take time out from your situation and see it from a fresh perspective. Working with a counsellor give you, or you and your partner, a chance to think about what you can do to change your situation for the better. It can also give you a chance to explore complex or difficult issues in a safe and confidential environment.

What happens after the first session?

You tell us when you are available to commit to regular counselling. This means we can book an appointment for you that you will be able to attend weekly, on the same day at the same time for as many weeks as you require. We will contact you as soon as an appointment becomes available.

What about your waiting list?

The length of time you wait will depend on your availability and the availability of our counsellors. The wider your availability the shorter your waiting time.

Are all your counsellors trained?

Yes. All counsellors either have a Relate recognised qualification in: Relationship & Marital Therapy, Family Counselling, Psycho Sexual Therapy, Counselling of Young People or are in the process of acquiring these qualifications.

If you want further information please discuss this with your counsellor.
